Edo state contingent to the 2022 21st National Sports Festival in Asaba Sunday was welcomed back to the state as the team arrived at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium, Benin.
The contingent of over 700 athletes, coaches, secretaries, supporting staff, press and security arrived at the state capital at 3:20 pm, wearing excitement all over.
Team Edo with 537 athletes took part in the just concluded National Sports Festival on Saturday evening and emerged third overall best out of the 36 states and federal capital territory that participated at the ‘Nigerian Olympics third with 78 gold, 94 silver, and 167 bronze behind Team Bayelsa and the overall winners, Team Delta.
The Permanent Secretary, of Edo State Sports Commission of Sports, Mrs. Sabina Chikere thanked the athletes for representing the state and coming out third, a position the commission will commend them for despite all odds, not in their favour. She however assured that proper preparations shall be in place for 2024 in Ogun and that the state will continue to put things in place for the development of the athletes who they believe that with time do the state and country proud in the nearest future.
The athletes were bidden a delightful farewell to their various destinations as they anticipate further instructions from their various secretaries.
The contingent left for Benin at noon departing the Federal College of Education (Technical) Asaba, their camp for the festival.
