Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face arch-rivals Algeria in a highly anticipated quarter-final of the 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Saturday at the Grand Stade de Marrakech.

Both former African champions are battling for a semi-final place in what has been one of the most exciting AFCON tournaments in recent history. Nigeria, three-time winners, arrived in Marrakech from Fès, while Algeria relocated from Rabat.

The Super Eagles have impressed so far, scoring 12 goals in four matches, including a commanding Round of 16 victory over Mozambique. Algeria, champions in 1990 and 2019, have scored eight goals and edged past DR Congo to reach this stage.

Nigeria’s attack has been led by Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, who have three goals each in the tournament. Lookman has also recorded five assists. Akor Adams opened his AFCON account against Mozambique, while Paul Onuachu could feature again after scoring Nigeria’s 150th AFCON goal earlier in the competition.

Midfield leaders Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi have played key roles, providing balance, control and leadership as Nigeria continue to show discipline and strong team spirit.

Algeria boast experienced stars including Riyad Mahrez, Baghdad Bounedjah, Ismael Bennacer and Ramy Bensebaini, making them a formidable opponent.

The winner will advance to the semi-finals to face either Cameroon or host nation Morocco.

With history, pride and a last-four place at stake, Saturday’s clash promises another thrilling chapter in the rivalry between the Super Eagles and the Desert Warriors.
