Edo dominates with gold medals on Day 8; on course for more gold as festival reaches a crescendo.

Team Edo was dominant on Day 8 of the ongoing national sports festival with gold medals won in various sports, though narrowly missing out on winning gold in other events.

Maris Ighalo continues to demonstrate her expertise in Darts narrowly losing to her opponents from Team Delta in the 300 women’s singles 2-1 to take home Silver, the Team in total clinched 3 silver and 2 bronze on the day to further swell the state’s medal table.

Esohe Idah gave his Deltan opponent no room to cause any damage as he was all over him from the start of their fight to clinch gold in the men’s 75kg Sanzhou.

The Team showed their strength and state investment in Cricket by at least picking a medal in the men’s ODI Cricket category with a bronze in their names in the men’s category.

For the women, they registered their dominance in the cricket world over other states as they were inspired by the youngest centurion in West Africa, Lucky Piety to pick gold in two finals – women’s ODI and T20 respectively.

Team Edo continued racking as many medals on the day with another silver in the men’s Squash after the duo of Seyi Abel and Femi Shedara narrowly lost to Team Delta in the final. The Team also picked up a bronze in the Mixed doubles by Femi Shedara and Dunni Kikiola to close the day with 1 silver and 3 bronze medals.

Team Edo went on to pick Bronze in the women’s 4X100m freestyle to end the day with 4 bronze in the aquatic events.

Adding to the medals haul, the team worked up in muscle by gathering 1 silver and 1 bronze in the men’s 73kg men’s weightlifting through Emmanuel Eric; Happiness Igbinosa added another 1 silver and bronze in the 64kg and 1 bronze in the 59kg courtesy of Victory Okundia.

Aminu Shagari stood the strongest in the Traditional ( Kokowa) sport by beating his opponents to take home the gold for the team.

The gold-digging continued with another 2 gold medals harvested in the 200m Deaf Athletics by Assurance Omoria, a silver in the women’s 200m through Deborah Ighawuanre, and another gold by Nathaniel Okpaise in the men’s 200m – Sweet Harvest!

The Athletics family continued to enjoy Golden moments with another gold medal in the men’s 1,500m by Sambo Hamid.

Back on the wrestling mat, Bright Ironekhian claimed one gold, and one bronze went the way of Amaosa Okoh.

The badminton team added their names to the golden book of the festival with the quartet of Ruth Ebere, Deborah Ihensekhian, Rahama Ibrahim, and Promise James winning gold in the women’s badminton event over Team Ogun, Lagos, and Kwara who shared the silver and bronze respectively.

The Kayak Team went another medal path when they took home 1 silver and 3 bronze in the canoe sports event.

The team closed office on Day 8 with 33 gold, 42 silver, and 85 bronze to a total of 160 medals

Activities continue today with a renewed assured hope of going steps further than yesterday’s activities, to pick more gold to further strengthen the state’s podium finish pursuit.
