Ex-Ghanaian International Asamoah Gyan has notched up the Super Eagles of Nigeria’s striker, Victor Osimhen to clinch the 2023 African Player of the Year award.

The former Black Star’s Captain made this known in an interview with Brilla FM, where he said that Osimhen’s astounding performance in the last campaign is enough to stand him out amongst other African nominees.

The masked 24-year-old talisman scored a record-breaking 26 goals in 32 Serie A appearances for Napoli as the Partenopei were crowned Scudetto champions for the first time in over three decades.

Gyan claimed that the sensational forward is the favourite candidate to go home with the best player award.

“For me, he (Osimhen) deserves it. As a striker and seeing what he is doing, for the first time in over 30 years, winning the league with Napoli. He deserves it,” Gyan told Brilla FM.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will announce the winner of the award in an event later this year, however, the former Arsenal forward Kanu Nwankwo remains to date the last Nigerian to win the honours since 1999.
