NPFL: Gusau advocating Abridged Format for 2023/24 Season

The upcoming 2023/24 season of the Nigeria Premier Football League could see a continuation in its format as Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), hinted at the possibility of continuing an abridged league structure.

The proposition was disclosed during a crucial meeting at the Sunday Dankaro House in Package B of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, where Gusau met with the leaders of the Nigeria Premier League board and the Club Owners Association. As discussions about the future of the league took centre stage, the NFF President introduced the idea of an abridged league, urging the hierarchy to carefully consider its merits.

Gusau’s surprise suggestion was met with curiosity and, perhaps, some scepticism among the attendees. He expressed his support for the proposed change, acknowledging that many might find it shocking. However, he emphasized the practical challenges of sustaining a full 38-match season, both for the clubs and the government.

“How many governments or clubs can sustain 38 matches on the road? I leave you to ponder and take a decision on that,” stated Gusau during the meeting.

The possibility of transitioning to an abridged league format has sparked discussions among football stakeholders in Nigeria. While some argue that a shorter season could help alleviate financial and logistical burdens on clubs, others remain cautious, concerned about potential impacts on the competitiveness and tradition of the league.

In the previous season, Enyimba emerged victorious in the 2022-23 NPFL campaign, securing the top spot at the Super 6 championship playoffs held in Lagos. Their triumph has now become a point of reflection as the league contemplates potential changes in the upcoming season.
