With Akwa United Football Club losing 1-0 to Bendel insurance Football Club at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium in Benin City Wednesday evening in a matchday 35 fixture of the 2024/2025 NPFL season, assistant Coach of Akwa United, Ifeanyi Nwachukwu, stated that his team lack of concentration in the second half cost them a result in Benin.
Coach Ifeanyi stated that his team had performed very well in the first half but lost so many scoring chances, spoke to journalists at the end of the game.
“The first half was very good, but it was a little bit of a lack of concentration in the second half that cost us the defeat. In summary, I think our boys played very well, and we had glaring chances, but we were unable to convert. If we had converted our chances, we wouldn’t have been defeated.”
On the chances of Akwa United to escape the drop, Coach Ifeanyi refused to throw in the towel, but was optimistic of his team’s ability to survive.
“I wouldn’t say for now, we wouldn’t give up until the last game. We still have two more games to play, we will fight till the end of the league, anything that happens, we’ll take it like that.”
Coach Ifeanyi also hailed Bendel Insurance for their performance and ability to get the result.
“Any good coach will tell you that the side that wins any game is good. I think we played very well. Lucky wasn’t on the outside today, but Bendel Insurance really tried today.”
Meyiwa Oritsewiyemi’s 54th-minute strike off a parried save from Akwa United’s goalkeeper helped the Okpekpolo boys grab a vital win over the Promise keepers.
The result leaves Akwa United pushed further down the relegation zone with 41 points in 18th position and 4 points away from Niger Tornadoes and Heartland FC who seat 17th and 16th respectively.
