Bayelsa Queens snatched a 1-0 win over Nasarawa United thanks to Mercy Itimi’s stoppage-time strike.
Itimi had an instant impact after coming on in the 85th minute as she struck the winner just five minutes later.
Matchday two Nigerian Women’s Football League Championship Super Six tournament at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa, saw the game start brightly for the Bayelsa team.
The first chance came from Odo Bibiana in the 7th minute, but her effort went above the crossbar.
As early as the 23rd minute, Domo Okara made the first change; Chinyere Igboamalu was substituted for Mercy Omokwo.
While three minutes were added as extra time, in the 47th minute, Mercy had a great chance against the Amazons but was thwarted by Shakirat Mashood’s weak strike after Mercy passed to her, resulting in a goal kick.
In the 52nd minute, Omokwo’s goal was ruled offside. Nasarawa Queens received the first yellow card of the game in the 66th minute for time wastage by their center-back.
In the 56th minute, Omokwo again netted but was ruled out for offside again. Another attempt made by Shakirat in the 66th minute was also ruled out as offside.
At exactly the 90th minute, Itimi Mercy, with the brilliant assist from Omokwo, found the back of the net, putting Bayelsa in the lead.
Bayelsa Queens drew their first game against Rivers Angels on matchday one.
