Okpebholo Rallies Edo to Embrace the Olympic Spirit on Olympic Day

As the world marked Olympic Day with activities promoting unity, health, and sporting excellence, the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Monday Okpebholo, joined global leaders in celebrating the enduring legacy of the Olympic Movement.

In a heartfelt message to commemorate the day, the Governor, represented by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa paid tribute to the vision of Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games, who believed in changing the world through the transformative power of sport.

“Olympic Day serves as an ideal occasion to rise and engage in physical activity,” the Governor said. “Engaging in sport fortifies both our mind and body, promoting robust health and well-being.”

Okpebholo highlighted the unifying nature of sports, stressing that they ignite dreams, spread joy, and bring people together across divides. He praised the Olympic Day’s continued role in fostering connections and solidarity among people, regardless of background or location.

Echoing the modern Olympic motto—Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together—the Governor underscored that sports are a tool not just for physical excellence, but also for inspiring humanity to strive for collective greatness.

“This is the profound essence of sport: it inspires us to be active, elicits the best within us, nurtures our health, and unites us as friends and a community,” he said.

The Governor concluded his message with a passionate call to action:
“In this Olympic spirit, I extend my warmest wishes for a splendid celebration of Olympic Day and proclaim: Let us move!”

Edo State joined other parts of the world in organising Olympic Day runs, fitness events, and community activities as part of the global celebration.
