Sunday Anyanwu Honours Late Father With Man of Match Award

Former Bendel Insurance defender, Sunday Anyanwu, has dedicated his Man of the Match honour in Ostersunds’ comprehensive 3-0 win over Umea FC in the Swedish Superettan League, to his late Father, Mr Anyanwu Ambrose, who passed on August 4, 2025, platinumnewsng.com is reporting.

Ostersunds condemned Umea to the bottom of the league, leaving the team in 16th place with a paltry 9 points after 23 games.

Chovanie Amatkarijo connected well with a jab in Simon Marklund’s defence, splitting cross in the 12th minute to give his side the lead.

Simon Marklund got his name on the scorers sheet when he doubled the lead in the 50th minute from the spot after a Umea defender had handled the ball, blocking a goal-scoring opportunity.

Three minutes later, Ostersunds scored similarly as the first goal —Ivorian Yannick Adjoumani, after beating his marker, delivered a cross into the box where Jabir Ali scored a hilarious ground pinning goal in the midst of two defenders to take the game beyond their guests.

Sunny Quality posed significant stats in the game with 65 touches, 8 key passes, 5 clearances, 4 interceptions and winning aerial duels 6 times against Umea has since played 18 league matches for the Jamtkraft Arena landlords.

Sunday Anyanwu’s withdrawal from the game was felt as Umea grew into the game in the last 5 minutes.

Umea was, however, presented with a series of scoring opportunities, but Anyanwu’s defence stood a good chance to keep a clean record in the game.

The win sees Ostersund sit 12th on the log and two points above relegation.

Speaking to Ayoola Adeleke of Platinum News on a WhatsApp call from his base, Anyanwu expressed delight over the team’s win, beyond his Man of the Match award —to him, there can not be a Man of the Match without other players contributing to it.

“My excitement is about the win and that I was able to contribute my part to ensure we get what the fans want.”

“All we want to do now is win, win and win and I think this will boost our morale going into the important time of the league.”

“For the Man of the Match, I want to dedicate it to my late father who passed on last month. I wish he were here to see this, but it’s fine, I have to keep doing well for him.”

This will further keep me in top shape for the rest of the season. I’m thankful to my teammates for making this happen, as I can’t alone put up a Man of the Match performance without others contributing to it.

Ostersunds will next welcome 13th placed Utsikten in match day 24 at the Jamtkraft Arena.
