Edo Queens kicked off their campaign in the Nigeria Women Football League, NWFL Super Six Premiership with a 5-1 victory over Confluence Queens of Kogi at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, platinumnewsng.com is reporting.
The scoring spree began early for Edo Queens, with Emem Essien finding the net first in the 13th minute. Offering a brief glimmer of hope for the Kogi-based team, Merit Offor restored parity in the 21st minute. Goodness Osigwe, however, found the back of the net in the 23rd minute to restore the Benin Ladies’ lead.
Confluence Queens fighting valiantly to mount a comeback, stumbled as they conceded again, this time Chioma Moses netted the third for Edo Queens in the 34th minute. Five minutes after the third, Essien netted a brace.
To add salt to injury, Osigwe ensured she got her brace as she controlled her loose ball mid-air, then fired from outside the box with a powerful shot into the top right corner at the one hour mark. Osigwe’s brace takes her to second place on the goalscorers chart with seven goals; one behind topscorer, Ijamilusi Folashade.
With this commanding performance on Saturday morning, Edo Queens have set a high bar for their competitors in the Super Six Premiership. Their next challenge awaits as they prepare to face Rivers Angels on Monday by 12 pm.
Edo Queens’ journey to the Super Six Premiership was marked by their impressive second-place finish in Group B during the regular season, accumulating 23 points. Meanwhile, Confluence Queens secured their spot in the Super Six with a strong showing in Group A, amassing 25 points.
