Nigeria’s U18 national basketball teams, the Junior D’Tigers and Junior D’Tigress, have officially arrived in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, ahead of the 2026 FIBA U18 AfroBasket Championship, with both teams eager to make a strong impression at Africa’s premier youth basketball tournament.
The championship will run from August 5 to 16, bringing together the continent’s brightest young talents in the race for continental honours and qualification for the 2027 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup.
Following the official draw, Nigeria’s U18 boys have been placed in Group A alongside hosts Côte d’Ivoire, former champions Egypt, and Chad, who qualified as Zone 4 winners. Nigeria secured its place at the championship after emerging as Zone 3 Qualifiers champions, setting up what promises to be a fiercely competitive group in Abidjan.
On the women’s side, the Junior D’Tigress have been drawn in Group C with Cameroon, Senegal, and Tunisia. Nigeria will be aiming to build on its rich pedigree in women’s basketball by advancing from a challenging pool that features some of the continent’s strongest youth basketball nations.
With their arrival confirmed, the attention now turns to final preparations, training sessions and acclimatisation before the opening tip-off. The technical crews will use the remaining days to fine-tune tactics and ensure the players are physically and mentally ready for the demanding tournament schedule.
The competition will begin with a round-robin group stage, after which the top two teams in each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarter-finals.
From there, the tournament progresses through the knockout stages to the semi-finals and final, while placement games will determine the remaining rankings. Importantly, the two finalists will earn Africa’s qualification spots for the 2027 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup.
Backed by the Nigeria Basketball Federation headed by Engineer Musa Kida and passionate basketball fans across the country, both the Junior D’Tigers and Junior D’Tigress will be determined to fly the nation’s flag high in Abidjan.
As the countdown to the championship ends, Nigeria’s next generation of basketball stars now has the opportunity to announce itself on the continental stage and begin its quest for AfroBasket glory.
