The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has dismissed reports claiming that the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be postponed from July 2025 to January 2026, platinumnewsng.com is reporting.
Rumours suggested a delay, with the BBC reporting that CAF General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba mentioning a potential move to January during an interview.
Mosengo-Omba, discussing the scheduling challenges, said,
“For the men, we need to make sure that the dates that we’ll be choosing will be in the interests of the players, for this we need to balance different aspects and also discuss with our partners and then we complete [the dates]. Scheduling is a nightmare for everybody.”
However, CAF refuted these claims in a post on X, stating, “Reports on AFCON 2025 are untrue. The CAF Executive Committee will meet, deliberate, and decide on the AFCON 2025 dates. CAF will then issue an official statement on the matter.”
Currently, no official dates have been confirmed for the biennial tournament, which faces a potential clash with the FIFA Club World Cup.
