Blowing every team that passed their way, the Edo Women’s Rugby Team went unbeaten and without conceding a point in six games to emerge champions of the first Nigerian Rugby Federation women’s tournament.
Team Edo having beaten Imo Pyramids, Abia Rugby Team and Delta B in the qualifying stage went on to clinically teach Benue Buffalos a hard lesson before descending on Delta Team A in the Semi Final to book a place in the final untouched.
The Coach Williams Ntiense-led side went into the final as the favourites and never disappointed with a thumping victory over Lagos-based stubborn side, ECO II in the final.
It was a final played under a heavy downpour, but that didn’t stop the Edo girls from adding to the rhythm of the waterfall as they rained in goal upon the Lagos side – Becky Okpitiko who was voted player of the tournament was instrumental in the final as her team handed the Lagos based side 17-0 beating to lift the maiden trophy amidst pump and wild jubilation.
Becky Okpitiko was meanwhile presented with a cash reward of one hundred thousand naira only (100,000) for emerging the Most Valuable Player and Highest Try Score in the tournament.
Earlier, Delta A had something to cheer about after defeating Team Delta B 15-5 to clinch the bronze medal.
Speaking after the game, Coach Williams Ntiense thanked God for the success and also the Sports Commission for their support. The coach however hinted that more support and sponsorship from the private sector can make the team grow in wings and compete on the international level
