CMD Cup: Uwa joins UNIBEN in quarter-final as First Bank, Benin Cameroon go home

Uwa All-Star on Friday evening, joined the University of Benin in the quarter-final of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital Chief Medical Director’s Inter-Professional Tournament, platinumnewsng.com is reporting.

UNIBEN had earlier on Thursday evening, secured a place in the quarter-final as they shared the spoils with Benin Cameroon in a one-all draw to finish with five points. On Friday evening, they were joined in the quarter-finals by Uwa All Stars finishing runners-up in Group C with four points.

Eze Michael’s 80th-minute finish sealed Uwa All-Star faith as they advanced to the knockout stage of the CMD Cup.

An early goal in the 6th minute from the Uwa All Stars striker gave the team the much-needed confidence to challenge for a place beyond the group. With pressure mounting on First Bank, they needed to score to keep hopes alive. The 69th minute saw a penalty awarded in their favour after a rash challenge in the 18-yard box.

Promise cooly slotted the resultant spot kick to level things at the UBTH mini stadium. With the game on and the action alive, Uwa All-Star quickly netted in the 76th and 80th minutes. All thanks to Uwa’s striker who scored his second of the day from the spot and Eze Michael in the 80th minute, who finished off FirstBank with a spectacular finish into the back of the bottom right corner.

UNIBEN and Uwa All Stars are now through to the next round finishing first and second respectively while FirstBank and Benin Cameroon who finished third and fourth respectively are out of the tournament.

The action continues on Saturday with enthralling fixtures from Group D on the card.
