The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Edo State Chapter, proved once again that they are not only sharp with the pen but also brilliant on the pitch, as they came from behind to record a 2–1 victory over the Nigerian Coaches Association, Benin Chapter, in a friendly match played on Monday evening at the Uwa Primary School pitch in Benin.

The encounter, organised to celebrate National Coaches Day, was a gesture of camaraderie between both bodies. The game saw the Coaches Association draw first blood in the first half when their Chairman, Felix Ewordi, calmly converted from the penalty spot after a defensive mix-up in the SWAN area.

However, the tide turned dramatically in the second half following the introduction of Saliu Ibrahim, the ever-energetic SWAN captain, who replaced David Alabi in midfield. His presence immediately brought balance and creativity to the team’s play, igniting a SWAN resurgence that left the Coaches chasing shadows.

SWAN’s equaliser came through James Deeka, who brilliantly finished a one-on-one opportunity, showing clinical precision that drew applause from even the opposition supporters. The writers nearly went ahead moments later when they were awarded a penalty, but Moses Idahosa’s effort was saved by the Coaches’ goalkeeper, who guessed right to deny the goal.

That miss only spurred Edo SWAN on, as more pressure forced a goal-line error that led to an own goal by the Coaches’ shot-stopper. From that moment, it was all about control and composure.

At the other end, SWAN’s dependable goalie, Precious Nath, stood tall between the sticks, producing Yacine winning worthy saves and calm interventions to ensure no late goal. His assured performance as a shot-stopper sealed the win for Edo SWAN.

Adding colour to the occasion, Edo FA Chairman, Fred Erhunmwunse, who joined proceedings at halftime, graciously provided refreshments for players of both sides as he spoke on unity and sportsmanship at the end of the game.
