Eunice Godwin’s hat-trick soars Edo Queens past Heartland Queens; set last four date with Nasarawa Amazons.

Edo Queens football club zooms into the semi-finals of the Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament with a comfortable 4-0 win over Heartland Queens of Owerri at the University of Benin Sports Complex.

Hattrick’s heroine, Eunice Godwin had a swell time in front of cheering fans with fantastic goals.

Edo Queens from the blast of the game settled well into the game and created enough chances with Suliat Abideen in her usual element of scoring long-range shots and Yemisi Samuel both missing out from scoring to give their team the lead in the first 15 minutes of the game.

It rained at some point during the match and it affected the flow of play for some time making fit teams struggle to get their rhythm. Heartland Queens’ resistance must be commended for how well they have been able to deal with Eko Queens as special kudos to their goalkeeper, Aturayo.

Edo Queens broke the deadlock in the 40th minute – Joy Jerry collected a pass from Suliat Abideen, and she chipped it over the Heartland Queens’ defence for Eunice Godwin to slide home beyond Aturayo.

Edo Queens replicate the first goal but more beautifully after Abideen once chipped a ball over her opponents for Joy Jerry to chest down for Eunice Godwin to make it two in the 44th minute and ended the first half in that fashion.

Moses Aduku threw Fajobi Yetunde in for Jumoke Alani and in just two minutes to the second half, Eddo Queens got the second goal. Suliat Abideen again dropped a beautiful pass for a free Eunice Godwin who wasted no time to lob over Aturayo to make it three and a hat trick for herself.

Joy Jerry got another opportunity to make it four but Aturayo stood firm to deny her. Another one fell for Yetunde Fajobi who was put through on goal, drove her ball to the edge of the 18-yard box and tried another shot which the goalkeeper once again denied.

Heartland Queens had their chance at goal but Nkiruka Obidinma cleared for a corner.

Edo Queens could have added the fourth goal in a goal-mouth melee – Fajobi Yetunde, and Yemisi Samuel both made attempts to score from a Joy Jerry beautiful pass into the box but the defence remained resilient to deny them the chance.

Moses Aduku brought out Yemisi Samuel and Rebecca Ajimuda for Efe Osakpolor and Emem Essien to further solidify his defence and strengthen his attack.

Edo Queens got the fourth goal in the 76th minute after Heartland Queens’ defender, Kelechi Orgu after Yetunde released a beautiful cross into the box aimed for Eunice Godwin.

Edo Queens had other chances before the end of the game, but they seemed contended with the four already in their bag.

Edo Queens will play against Nasarawa Amazon in the first semi-final of the tournament at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Wednesday at 3 pm.
