Federation Cup:Rivers Angels clinch trophy after 1-0 win

Rivers Angels are Federation Cup champions for the ninth time after a slim 1-0 victory over Naija Ratels at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, platinumnewsng.com is reporting.

Bothell teams came into the game with a sight on lifting the prestigious and oldest women competitive football trophy in Nigeria but Blessing Okpe’s spit kick made all the difference.

With so much tenacity and missed chances from both teams, neither Rivers Angels in their traditional blue nor Naija Ratels donning their green and white jersey were able to find the back of the net under the scorching sun until a handball incident.

Trying to stop a shot from Rivers Angels attacker, defender Adebayo Jumai handled the ball with her hand resulting into a spot kick in the 45+3rd minute. Blessing Okpe did not fail to convert the goal despite Naija Ratels goalie, guessing right and having a touch of the ball.

The second half began with Rivers Angels showing strength. Okpe, Idris Sefiat and Peace Effiong all trying to.dounkenthe lead but, all efforts were futile. Naija Ratels also in search of an equalizer failed to net at the end of 90 minutes.

This victory means Ogbonda Whyte wins his first major trophy with Rivers Angels since he was appointed early in 2023.
