Okpebholo Champions Healthy Living at Olympic Day Run

Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo has described sports as an important part of human culture that unites and promotes a healthy lifestyle and a friendly community.

The Governor asserted while addressing Edo athletes and other participants as he flagged off the 2026 Olympic Day Run at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Saturday.

Represented by the Chief of Staff, Hon. Yakubu Oshiorenua Musa (Yakson), Governor Okpebholo commended the Edo State Sports Commission under Hon Amadin Desmond Enabulele for aligning with the global community in the celebration of the legacies of Olympics founding fathers.

“Olympic Day is a celebration of something simple but powerful: The Joy of moving together. Sport moves us, not just our bodies, but our confidence, our mindset.”

And the way we connect, when we move, we feel better – it keeps our mind and body strong and healthy. And when we move together, we lift each other.

Sport is for all of us, whether you’re a mother, a child, a teammate, an Olympian or just starting, we all begin in one place.”

Governor Okpebholo noted that the hardest step is always the first one, adding that self-doubt can hold us back.”  It can make us think we are not ready but if you are, you can do this”

“Every time you choose to move, you build confidence, you start to believe in yourself and you realise you’re not alone. That’s what sport really gives us, not just health but community.

“Sports give a sense of belonging. On Olympic Day, all around the world, our community comes to life – in parks, schools and streets, people are coming together to move, this is happening everywhere.

“So, join in the celebration and be a part of it – not just on Olympic Day, but every day. Let’s move together and help each other take that first step.”

So this Olympic Day, let’s take that first step- together, you can do this! Let’s move!” He emphasized.

The event which was held under this year’s global theme, “Let’s Move,” brought together, top government officials, athletes, coaches, sports administrators, and fitness enthusiasts at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon Amadin Desmond Enabulele, represented by Executive Director, Frank Ilaboya, expressed appreciation to the state government and the Chief of Staff to the Governor Musa Yakubu for their support and esteemed presence at the occasion.

He also commended staff and athletes for their courage. “As we conclude this year’s memorable Olympic Day Run, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to Mr Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo and everyone who made this year’s

“Your enthusiasm, commitment and sportsmanship truly reflect the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect. Today, we have not only celebrated fitness and healthy living but we have also  demonstrated the power of unity through sports.” He said.

The former Women in Sports Association members and 1972 Olympic medalist Isaac Ikhuoria, Oly we’re among the veteran sports personalities present at the occasion.
