It was a day of intense competition, breathtaking goals, and unexpected twists and turns, leaving everyone on the edge of their seats and hungry for more with 15 goals and four clean sheets recorded on Day 2 of the Platinum Cup pre-season scouting tournament.
As the dust settled and the floodgates of heaven rained in Benin City on this unforgettable day, one thing was clear: Platinum Cup 2023 had matured spectacularly, and there was no telling what other surprises and triumphs lay ahead.
Worshippers 2-1 Ine Stars
⚽ Onyegabor Saturday 17′, Ayo Monday 65′ – Obazee Odion 39′
The first match of the day saw Worshippers play against One Star inStarree-goal thriller. Onyegabor Saturday opened the scoring with a calm finish in the 17th minute to give the Idosa Boys the lead but a leveller from Obazee Odion in the 39th minute equalised the scoreline. Worshippers were however able to grab three points courtesy of Ayo Monday who proved why Worshippers deserve to be atop Group C.
Florence Joshua 0-4 BJ FC
⚽ Purpose Ayemogie 10′, 27′, Durojaiye Abiodun 64′, Christian Edem 75′
Platinum Cup witnessed its highest victory since the tournament began as Coach Douglas Idahosa’s BJ FC rained goals on Akure-based Side, Florence Joshua. Purpose Ayemogie increased his goal tally in the competition to five goals against a strong opposition while his teammates, Durojaiye Abiodun and Christian Edem registered their names on the goal sheet.
Oloke United 0-2 Rolly FC
⚽ Godstime Edo, Ujiagbe Samson
Rolly FC saw their first win of the tournament against a rejuvenated Oloke United side. The first half had ended goalless but tactical tweaks from Coach Chijioke Egonatu restored Rolly’s hope of remaining tournament favourites in the Platinum Cup. Godstime Edo and Ujiagbe Samson’s goal was enough to get all three points.
Benin Warriors 0-0 St Andrews
A game of goalscoring opportunities failed to live up to its hype as both teams share the spoils under the hot scorching sun in Benin City. Resilient St. Andrews held their defence against Benin Warrior’s proficient attack. Profligate in front of the goal, St. Andrews could not also get a goal in the game. The Samba Boys have now played two goalless draws.
Yak FC 4-2 Etto FC
Pulsating and energy zapping, the eagerly anticipated match of the day was filled with exhilarating displays in Benin. With both sides maintaining the momentum of the game in a bid to claim a victory, the thrilling encounter recorded six goals. Yak Sports were the first to start the goal galore. With neither side willing to back down, it was 2-2 between both sides. In no distant time, Yak Sports took the lead and increased their tally to four goals.
The action continues tomorrow, Friday, April 13 as teams will be looking to claim maximum points the match promises to be a thrilling encounter, with plenty of drama and excitement.
