Weeks after Rena Wakama became the first woman to be appointed as the head coach of the Nigerian Women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, the 31-year-old coach has explained how she landed the job.
Wakama’s selection comes at a crucial time for the team, as they aim to secure their fourth consecutive FIBA Afrobasket title. D’Tigress has been undefeated since 2017, making them the team to beat in the competition.
In an exclusive interview with ThisDay, Wakama explains how Musa Adamu, the General Manager of the team, personally contacted Wakama to inform her about the opening for the prestigious coaching position. Recognizing the significance of the opportunity, Wakama expressed her interest in going through the interview process alongside other candidates.
“After being contacted by Musa, I knew there was an opening for the Nigeria national team job,” Wakama shared in an interview. “I was asked if I was interested in going through the interview process with some other candidates, and of course, I was interested.”
Wakama described a series of interviews and calls with various individuals, all of which ultimately led her to secure the coveted coaching position. Grateful for the opportunity to lead the national team, she expressed her appreciation for the trust placed in her abilities and her gratitude to God.
“I thank God for this opportunity to coach the national team and being the first woman to lead the national team,” Wakama emphasized.
Wakama’s appointment marks a significant milestone for women’s representation in Nigerian basketball, and her achievement is expected to inspire a new generation of female athletes and coaches.
