The Executive Director of Operations and Sports Development at the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Chikere Sabina, has congratulated Edo Queens for their remarkable triumph over Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa in the final of the WAFU B CAF Women’s Champions League qualifying tournament.
Edo Queens showed remarkable resilience in the final, twice coming from a goal down to force a 2-2 draw at the end of regulation time before eventually prevailing 4-1 on penalties to clinch the championship.
Reacting to the team’s performance, Sabina, on Sunday morning in a WhatsApp call with Platinum News, described the victory as a fulfilment of destiny, noting that the difficult stages the Queens encountered throughout the tournament had prepared them for the final triumph.
“It is written in the stars. This is what God has destined, and that is why the team had to go through the different stages they went through in this tournament, especially against Ampem Darkoa in the last group match and in the final match.”
Sabina urged the players and technical crew to sustain the momentum and remain focused as they prepare for the CAF Women’s Champions League later in 2026.
She also commended the Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadi Enabulele, for what she described as visionary leadership and his unwavering support for Edo Queens, Bendel Insurance, and the overall development of sports in the state.
Sabina equally praised the Chairman of Bendel Insurance Football Club and Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Jarrett Tenebe, for his support and presence around the team.
“His presence with the team has helped the team a lot, and I hope he continues with this full support.”
The Edo State Sports Commission executive also expressed appreciation to the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his fatherly support, timely release of funds, and continued commitment to the team whenever the need arises.
According to Sabina, Edo Queens will remain determined to represent Nigeria creditably when they feature in the CAF Women’s Champions League later this year.
She also used the occasion to encourage young girls across the state and Nigeria at large to remain committed to their dreams, regardless of the challenges they may encounter.
Sabina urged them not to become weary or give up on their aspirations, but to confront challenges with courage, determination and perseverance.
