Despite a sudden downpour threatening to disrupt proceedings, Sharon Ekhiwere’s Shavik FC proved their mettle under pressure, grinding out a hard-fought 1–0 win over Obagie All Stars, thanks to Sado Abdulazeez, on Thursday afternoon to book a spot in the quarterfinals of the ongoing Edo State Football League.
The match, played at the Western Boys High School Pitch in Benin City, saw Shavik FC field nearly the same starting XI that defeated Alhaji FC 1–0 last weekend at the Egor Centre. The only late change came just before kick-off, with goalkeeper Osagie Agbonifo stepping in for Emmanuel.
From the opening whistle, Shavik FC dominated possession and dictated the tempo, displaying their fluid passing and disciplined structure. Their early pressure nearly paid off in the 19th minute when Oluwafemi latched onto a precise through ball from Victor, only to be denied by the alert Obagie All Stars goalkeeper.
Midway through the first half, rain began to fall, initially as a light drizzle before turning into a heavy downpour. But even as the pitch turned slick and challenging, both teams pressed on, refusing to let the weather dictate the outcome.
Shavik’s persistence eventually paid off in the 73rd minute. Super-sub Sado Abdulazeez who scored the decisive goal against Alhaji Fc, had been introduced moments earlier, broke the deadlock with a stunning finish into the net, leaving the Obagie goalkeeper rooted sparking wild celebrations in the stands.
Despite Obagie All Stars pushing for an equaliser, it was Shavik who continued to look more dangerous on the counter, nearly grabbing a second on multiple occasions. In the end, Ekhiwere’s men saw out the game with composure and energy, securing another clean sheet and a spot in the last eight.
Shavik FC will have a huge mountain to climb when they face experienced side, Get Fit FC. Get Fit FC, defeated Royal Force 2-0 to book a place in this stage of the competition. Get Fit FC as a team consists of amateur players as well as former Nigeria National League and Nigeria Premier Football League players who are unattached.
