Showers of medal for Team Edo on Day; team sets sights on more on day 5

It was a productive eventful day for Team Edo at the ongoing 21st National Sports Festival going on in Asaba as the athletes continued from where they left on day 3 of the Nigerian Olympics.

The team started the day with a 22-26 defeat to Sokoto in the men’s handball event. The women’s team was forced to a 22-22. The women’s team went on to pick a win in their second game 18-16 against Team Lagos.

Team Edo started picking medals for the day when Blessing Aiwekho narrowly was beaten by her Kwaran counterpart to settle for Silver in the Para Women’s Singles of Table Tennis Class 3. Moments later, Beauty Osariemen put up a tactically sound display to clinch gold in the Women’s Singles Class 4, courtesy of Beauty no Osariemen; Team Lagos and Ogun won silver and bronze medals in the category.

In the Women’s Class 8&10 team event, Faith Obazuaye led Uniomwan Alimat Amenze and Osaro Benedict Abimbola to a silver finish behind Team Ogun who claimed Gold and above Team.

Edo struck the first Gold of the day courtesy of Faith Obazuaye’s technical awareness over her Team Delta Opponents who claimed Silver as Ogun went home with the bronze. Team Edo clinched her second gold of the afternoon through Beauty Osariemen who beat Team Lagos and Ogun to second and third.

Edo went on to pick bronze in the Women’s Class 4&5 team event, Men’s team Class 1-3, and Men’s Singles Class 3. Exhibiting a never say die spirit, Team Edo claimed Silver in the Class 10 Men’s Singles behind Team Rivers who earned gold and above ‘bronze’ decorated team Delta. Team Edo finished the day in Para Table Tennis with a silver medal win in Women’s Class 8&10, Team Ogun and Delta won Gold and Bronze respectively.

Four of the Team Edo Boxers moved to the medals table. The fighters with the presence of exceptional boxer, Adeoti Fawas of 51kg who had a brilliant outing on a classical bout with Lagos state National Boxer Qudus Lateef, are unbeaten in the competition so far.

In Para powerlifting, Osaro claimed Silver for the team in the men’s 54kg category. Team Delta picked the gold and Ogun, the bronze. Team Edo closed the day in Para Powerlifting with a bronze by Ojomon Nicholas in 80kg as Delta and Ogun went with gold and silver respectively.

In Men’s handball, the team suffered a narrow 21-19 defeat to Delta.

Ada Okungbowa in Para Table Tennis expressed sadness over the treatment meted out to him by the officials of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation. Ada who is classified as a Class 5 player was asked to move to Class 8 after two games earlier played in Class 5. To him, it was a robbery and not justice for humankind by the Table Tennis Federation.

Onajite Onuyoh has picked up another medal for Team Edo in Darts 301 Female Singles – this time, a Silver. Delta and Kwara won Gold and Bronze respectively.

In the men’s 301 Singles event, Amin Aimuaemmonsa picked Bronze. Delta – Gold, Lagos – Silver

Medals Summary: to wrap up day 4, the team won 2 Gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze medals.
