…says it’s a milestone achievement

Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt.Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu has described the 50th anniversary of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, as a milestone that must be celebrated by well-meaning Nigerians and medical professionals.

Shaibu while receiving the CMD, Professor Darlington Obaseki and his team on a courtesy visit at his office oted the services rendered by UBTH to humanity, the manpower it has produced which cuts across the entire nation and beyond are laudable achievements which are unquantifiable”.

“The hospital is there, not just to serve Edo State and Nigeria, but to serve the world”.

“During Covid-19, we had to travel to Finland and other countries of the world, to bring back to Edo State, some of the best products of UBTH to help carry out emergency health services”.

“We don’t look at UBTH as a federal institution, we see it as our institution because we’re the first beneficiaries of its services”.

“As a Government, we’re very responsible and responsive in handling every government institution, be it State or Federal”.

“I thank you for your unflinching medical support anytime you’re called upon, even at odd hours,” Shaibu added.

The Deputy Governor, however, assured the Chief Medical Director, CMD of UBTH, Prof. Darlington Obaseki, and his colleagues of the government’s support in celebration of its 50th anniversary.

Earlier, the CMD of UBTH, Prof. Darlington Obaseki, appreciated the Deputy Governor, noting “your support for UBTH is too numerous to mention here.”

“However, we must highlight three of such support including your frequent visits to our facilities during the Covid-19; your assistance in helping to set up the isolation center which helped to remedy the Covid-19 situation.”

“One of the unusual is your annual calls to UBTH management, demanding the list of unpaid medical bills by patients. This, you’ve been paying without knowing who is involved. These accumulated bills are over #80 -100m.”

“With your assistance, the State Government gave us a cart to help respond quickly to some emergency cases.. Sincerely, we appreciate what you are doing for us and the State in general”.

“UBTH was established in 1973 to serve the West Africa sub-region and not just Nigeria. Many of our equipment are gradually wearing out and we need to replace them”.

“We have lined up several activities, like training citizens on accident emergency management; free and subsidized medical care to citizens as part of UBTH 50th anniversary celebration, commencing Sunday, 18th December 2022. The celebration will be in May 2023”, Prof. Obaseki added.

The UBTH 50th Anniversary Committee has Prof. Mrs. Obehi Okojie, as its Chairperson.
