The 2023 edition of the West Africa Trophy Cricket Tournament came to an end on Sunday after over 10 days of top class cricket matches hosted at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Cricket Oval, by Nigeria, platinumnewsng.com is reporting.
The final match was indeed a final, as it tested the internal strength and mentality of the winners, the Yellow Greens of Nigeria who defeated Rwanda in a keenly contested game.
After the first seven overs, the yellow greens already had four wickets out with just 24 runs to show, as they batted first, having won the toss and opting to bat. It was the worst start of any game in the tournament for the Nigerians.
The yellow Greens fought really hard and were able to score 103 runs for the loss of 7 wickets at the end of a 20.0 overs innings.
104 runs was the target for Rwanda to win the trophy against all odds. This target became seemingly very possible when the Rwandan’s started the 2nd innings strongly, scoring 40 runs without losing a single wicket after 8.0 overs. It was a very nervy and thrilling end as the Nigerians refused to take ‘NO’ for an answer
The remaining overs of the game went all in favour of the yellow greens who put in their best and beyond, to restrict their opponents from scoring progressive runs. They only managed 86 runs for the loss of 8 wickets after 20.0 overs. And it ended as a 17 runs victory for the hosts.
Danladi Isaac of Nigeria was named the player of the match. He scored 44 runs and bowled 1 wicket. Other top performers for the yellow greens include Kareem Ridwan, the junior yellow greens Captain who scored 39 runs and Asia Joshua also bowled 3 wickets.
