Nigeria’s D’Tigers demonstrated immense resilience and defensive grit on Thursday, going toe-to-toe with Group E leaders Cameroon in their opening fixture of the second window of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers.
Although the hard-fought encounter ended 78-62 in favour of the Cameroonians, the Nigerian squad showed flashes of the brilliant all-around basketball that saw them sweep their previous three games. After a slow start in the first quarter, the D’Tigers quickly regrouped to tie the second quarter 18-18, keeping the margins incredibly competitive throughout the second half.
Despite a tough collective shooting night, the team’s pedigree and veteran leadership shone brightly through their sheer hustle and work rate.
Josh Okogie was an absolute force on the glass and a brilliant facilitator. Even when his shots weren’t falling, he found ways to heavily impact the game, pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds, dishing out 6 assists, and grabbing 2 steals. Caleb Agada led the scoring charge for Nigeria with 13 points, while also stuffing the stat sheet with 5 assists, 4 rebounds, and a team-high 3 steals, proving to be a constant menace on the defensive end.
Reacting to the team’s performance, the President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Engr. Musa Kida** expressed unwavering support for the squad, praising their effort and emphasising that the journey to the 2027 World Cup remains firmly on track.
“We are incredibly proud of the fighting spirit the boys showed out there today against a very tough Cameroonian side,” Kida stated. “Basketball is a game of margins, and sometimes the shots just don’t fall your way. But the hustle, the rebounding, and the defensive intensity were all present.”
“This qualification series is a marathon, not a sprint. The technical crew and the players know exactly what needs to be adjusted, and I have absolute confidence that they will bounce back stronger. Our World Cup destiny is still very much in our own hands, and we are right behind them.”
The D’Tigers have a quick turnaround and will immediately pivot to a crucial showdown against South Sudan on Friday at 1:00 PM WAT. Armed with their undeniable talent, elite rebounding, and renewed focus, Nigeria will be looking to execute with sharper offensive precision and secure a vital victory to keep their qualification campaign moving forward.
