WTT Lagos Contender: Kweku Tandoh Assures Excellent Hosting

World Table Tennis Contender —Lagos 2025 Director General, Dr. Kweku Tandoh, has assured the table tennis world of Lagos’ commitment to innovation and excellence in hosting this year’s international events in Nigeria.

World’s top players and Africa’s best have been confirmed for the money-spinning WTT Contender Lagos 2025 from July 22 to 26 at Molade Okoya’s indoor sports Hall, in Nigeria’s Centre of Excellence, Lagos State.

Part of the upgrades to this year’s event is the prize money, which has seen an upward review to $100,000, up from $75,000 in 2024.

Dr. Tandoh speaking ahead of the event, registered the organising committee’s plans for the international challenger.

“We are determined to keep raising the bar in delivering a world-class tournament. With more top-tier players returning—and others debuting based on our growing reputation —it is clear that Lagos is becoming a key destination on the global table tennis map,”

Players will compete across five categories: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. Champions in each event will earn 400 WTT ranking points, crucial for qualification in global events such as the WTT Champions Series and World Cups.

Amongst the players officially unveiled for the challenger are world No. 9 Hina Hayata of Japan, African champion Hana Goda of Egypt and French burgeoning star, Prithika Pavade.

Home favourite, Quadri Aruna returns to home soil after missing last year’s tournament. Other top players are Danish southpaw, Anders Lind —in pursuit of his first WTT title, Croatian powerhouse Tomislav Pucar, Japanese Yuta Tanaka and Tunisian Wassim Essid.
