Edo Queens Football Club of Nigeria begins her CAF Women’s Champions League qualifications journey with an impressive 5-0 win over AS Garde Nationale.
The Benin-based side, Sunday evening beat their opponents from Niger Republic, AS Garde Nationale 5-0 in their match day 1 of the WAFU-B CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers at the Stade de Yamoussoukro.
The Moses Aduku-led girls started the game on the bright side and had promising attacks initiated against an all-defensive AS Garde. The deadlock was, however, broken in the 35th minute, courtesy of Emem Essien’s solo run.
Two minutes into the first half added time, Suliat Abideen left the opponent’s goalkeeper motionless as she gave her team a comfortable lead from the spot.
The second half commenced and it took the Nigerian side only four minutes to make it three. A rocket free kick from Blessing Iliveda from 22 meters away from the goal took the game beyond the Nigerien side.
Substitute Esther Moses connected well with Esther Iyang’s defence-splitting pass to make it four for the Nigeria women’s football league champions in the 71st minute.
Three minutes later, another substitute, Joy Jerry, hit the roof of the net from another well-orchestrated team play from the midfield through the flank to put the icing on the cake.
With the win, the Nigerians sit top of group B with 3 points and a 5-goal advantage. The Benin-based girls will take on Hasaacas Ladies FC in a Make or Mar match for the Ghanaian side, on Wednesday, August 14 at the same stadium
