The Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament is set to return for the fourth season with games scheduled to take place from October 2nd to October 13th, 2024, platinumnewsng.com is reporting.
The biggest annual women’s pre-season tournament in Nigeria will feature 14 teams, including two international clubs.
Under the theme “Say No To Teen Pregnancy & Child Marriage,” the tournament continues to reflect on crucial social issues while celebrating women’s football.
The participating teams include 12 Nigerian teams: Edo Queens, Fortress Ladies, Bayelsa Queens, Delta Queens, Rivers Angels, Heartland Queens, Abia Angels, FC Robo Queens, Ekiti Queens, Naija Ratels, Nasarawa Amazons, and Confluence Queens. They will be joined by two teams from the Benin Republic: Espoir FC de Cotonou and Aigle Royal d’Adjara.
The tournament organized by Betsy Obaseki, First Lady of Edo State, reassured Nigerians that the tournament would continue after this year despite her tenure coming to an end.
She went on to add that the tournament will continue as a private tournament with the board of trustees already in place. When asked about owning a female team, she replied that Edo Queens is enough as she has adopted the team.
The stakes are high with impressive prize money on offer. The champions will walk away with ₦10,000,000, while the first runner-up will earn ₦7,000,000. The third-place team will receive ₦5,000,000, and the fourth-place finisher will be awarded ₦3,000,000. Each team participating in the tournament will also receive an appearance fee of ₦750,000.
Edo Queens were champions of the last edition winning on penalties against Bayelsa Queens at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
