The statement reads, “We are delighted to announce a ₦10 million cash reward for the technical crew and players of our State’s women’s football team and Nigerian Women’s Premier League (NWPL) champions, Edo Queens, by His Excellency, Mr Godwin Obaseki and his wife, Betsy, in recognition of the team’s impressive performance at the just-concluded CAF Champions League and their subsequent nomination as CAF Women’s Club of the Year.

“Our superstar Edo Queens have continued to make us proud with their exploits and achievements, which have placed Edo State and Nigeria on the football map of Africa. Having conquered Nigeria as the reigning champions of the Nigerian Women’s Football League (NWFL), they have now made their mark on the continental stage with their nomination as CAF Women’s Club of the Year.

“We celebrate this great accomplishment, which further validates the impact of the deliberate investments and reforms in the sports sector under the immediate past government of His Excellency, Mr Godwin Obaseki, which repositioned the State as a centre of excellence in sports.”

Osagie added, “Through numerous initiatives, including the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT), Nigeria’s foremost pre-season women’s football tournament, the State was able to harness local talent, provide a platform for young women to showcase their skills, and nurture them into becoming world-class players.

These bold efforts were instrumental in building a strong foundation for the success we are celebrating today, and we are proud of the team for being a good reflection of the progress made in sports development in the past eight years.”
