Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. But Desmond Enabulele, has congratulated the entire Edo Queens Football Club on their West African Football Union, Zone B triumph over Ampem Darkoa of Ghana.
Edo Queens converted all four of their kicks from the penalty Mark after they had come back from behind, twice in the regulation time.
The Nigerian Women Football League Premiership champions fought back on two occasions to force a 2-2 draw at regulation time and take the game to kicks of luck.
Ampem Darkoa struck as early as the 2nd minute through Beline Nyarko, but Edo Queens responded almost immediately, with Doosuur Anastasia Atume restoring parity in the 4th minute.
Nyarko again restored the Ghanaian side’s lead against the Nigerian side after converting from the spot in the 74th minute.
Oluebube Umejiaku would, however, put her team back in the conversation for the final with an equaliser on the death of the game.
Reacting to the win, the chairman described the victory as a historic achievement for Edo State and Nigeria.
He dedicated the triumph to Edo State governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, commending the governor for his unwavering support for sports development and his commitment to repositioning Edo State as a leading sports destination.
Enabulele hailed the players for their fighting spirit, noting that their ability to come from behind twice in the final demonstrated the character, discipline and resilience that have become synonymous with Edo sports.
Moreover, Bishop, as fondly called by friends and associates, congratulated the technical crew led by the stand-in coach, Kennedy Boboye, for their tactical discipline, determination and ability to keep the team focused throughout the competition.
He expressed confidence that Edo Queens would continue to make Edo State and Nigeria proud when they take their place among Africa’s elite women’s clubs at the CAF Women’s Champions League.
With the WAFU-B crown secured, Edo Queens now turn their attention to the bigger stage — the CAF Women’s Champions League scheduled for South Africa later in the year.
