The Nigeria Mixed Martial Arts Federation (NMMAF) has officially announced the 2025 National Open Mixed Martial Arts Championship, platinumnewsng.com is reporting.
In a letter sent to all state Sports Commission chairmen, the Director General of the Sports Commission, the state directors of sports, the Paramilitary, and other stakeholders, dated August 22nd, 2025, the event will take place from September 7th to 15th, 2025, at Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos State.
According to the statement signed by Ademola Johnson, Secretary-General of NMMAF, the event—tagged “National Amateur MMA Championship: The Road to AFC”—is fully sanctioned by both NMMAF and the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF).
The championship is expected to feature over 100 amateur athletes from across Nigeria, supported by more than 20 NMMAF officials and over 30 technical and production crew members.
The competition will serve as Nigeria’s official national ranking event and as a pathway for Nigerian athletes to qualify for the AFC Amateur Circuit. It promises to be the largest amateur MMA competition in Africa, with a focus on youth development, education, and national pride.
The schedule includes registration, seminars, and officials’ training from days 1 to 3, followed by venue setup on day 4. Days 5 to 7 will feature the opening ceremony, elimination rounds, quarter-finals, and semi-finals, while the grand finals, medal presentations, and closing ceremony will take place on the final day.
NMMAF has requested support from the Lagos State Sports Commission, including accommodation for athletes and officials, medical services throughout the event, media collaboration, and adequate security for all participants and spectators.
With the growing popularity of MMA globally, the NMMAF sees this championship as a major milestone in elevating the sport in Nigeria and positioning its athletes for international recognition.
