The National Sports Commission (NSC) has sent heartfelt congratulations to Nigeria’s U18 Women’s Basketball team, the Junior D’Tigress, for officially securing their qualification to the 2027 FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup in China.
The Commission also reserved special praise for the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) and its President, Engr. Musa Kida, whose exemplary leadership continues to drive the unprecedented, progressive success of the country’s national basketball teams on the global stage.
The Nigerian girls demonstrated absolute resilience in their tense semi-final clash against host nation Côte d’Ivoire at the ongoing FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket. Braving a difficult environment and a highly vocal home crowd, the Junior D’Tigress ground out a hard-fought 53-50 victory to snatch the coveted World Cup ticket and book a high-stakes Sunday final against defending champions Mali.
The Director-General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, lauded the players for their grit and explicitly commended Engr. Musa Kida and his NBBF board for consistently delivering results that make the nation proud. Under Kida’s administration, the women’s basketball framework in Nigeria has transformed into a dominant force, characterised by winning mentalities and structural growth.
“The girls have done very well to secure their place at the Women’s World Cup in China next year, which shows their commitment, patriotism, and discipline,” Hon. Olopade stated. “Now that the World Cup ticket has been secured, I have no doubt that they can win the AfroBasket in Sunday’s final against Mali.”
Looking ahead to the global tournament in China, the NSC Director-General offered a firm guarantee of governmental backing:
“As we have always done with every other sport, I want to assure the girls and the NBBF that the NSC will ensure they get the best of preparations ahead of the World Cup in China. We will work closely with the NBBF to make sure the girls have an impactful campaign.”
