19 Days To Go! Sportsville Unveils 2026 Awards Nominees

Excitement builds within the national sports community as stakeholders look forward to the unveiling of nominees for this year’s Sportsville Special Recognition Awards.

A total of 18 names are set to be honoured in seven award categories, and the committee had to extend its deliberations to late Monday morning to fine-tune the list.

The categories are: Icon, Sports Personality of the Year, Sports Transformative Award, and Achievers Category. Other categories are, Visionary Leadership, Special Recognition, Sports Facilities (both private and government), and corporate categories.

Harry Iwuala, the chairman of the awards committee, disclosed that nominees have been carefully selected based on their pedigree and their contributions to sports development in the nation.

“It has been a herculean task trying to narrow down the lengthy list of deserving individuals and corporate bodies to the few names we are expected to present, but my colleagues and I have applied our best judgment to carry out the task.

“So, I can confidently say that we have been able, though tough, to do a great job that will continue to put a premium value on the Sportsville Award,” the Media Director of the Nigeria Professional League Board added.

Other members of the committee are experienced sports journalists and award-winning television and radio sports show presenters, Toyin Ibitoye and Salihu Ibrahim PhD. Sports Editor of the Sun newspaper, Joe Apu and Samuel Ahmedu.
There is also award-winning Ayoola Adeleke, Joy Obayemi, and Sportsville’s Chief Operating Officer and anchor of Sportsville, Mathew Okugbe, completing the list of highly experienced professionals in sports journalism with a combined experience of over 60 years.

The unveiling ceremony fixed for Lagos on Tuesday March 10, will set the tone for the hosting of the awards ceremony.

The Sportsville Special Recognition Award was initiated in 2020 as part of the activities lined up to celebrate 20 years of Sportsville broadcast on Tv and radio.

This year’s ceremony is fixed for March 28th at the prestigious Lagos Country Club in Lagos.
