Fulfilled Kida Ends Eight-Year NBBF Tenure, Tasks Successor to Raise the Bar

After eight years at the helm of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Musa Kida has announced the end of his tenure, saying he is leaving office deeply fulfilled by the progress recorded under his administration.

Speaking at the grand finale of the 2026 Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball League, Kida reflected on his eight-year stewardship and expressed confidence that the foundation laid by his administration would provide a platform for further growth in Nigerian basketball.

His valedictory remarks came after an exciting women’s basketball final in which MFM Basketball Club narrowly defeated perennial champions First Bank Elephant Girls 66–64 in a thrilling contest.

The closely fought encounter highlighted the increasing competitiveness and quality of women’s basketball in Nigeria, a development Kida said he was proud to have witnessed during his time as NBBF president.

“I really feel fulfilled. The finals were well represented,” Kida said after the championship decider.

“After eight years, I am leaving so fulfilled. The next person will definitely do better, but I think we have set a good pace for the federation.”

Reflecting on his two-term tenure, Kida said his administration had made its contribution to the development of basketball across the country.

“I have done my own bit. I am very proud of what we have done,” he added.

Despite his achievements, Kida stressed that the future of Nigerian basketball should not depend on one individual. Instead, he called for collective responsibility and clear plans from anyone seeking to lead the federation.

“Nigerian basketball is not all about me; it’s about us all,” he said.

“We need to ask anybody who wants to lead us to tell us his or her plans for the federation.”

With Kida’s eight-year tenure drawing to a close, attention will now shift to the next leadership of the Nigeria Basketball Federation. His message to the incoming administration is clear: build on the existing foundation, introduce fresh ideas and take Nigerian basketball to an even higher level.

The conclusion of Kida’s tenure also comes at a significant moment for women’s basketball, with the dramatic 2026 Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball League final providing a fitting showcase of the competitiveness and development of the sport in Nigeria.
