Ghanaian and African football legend Stephen Appiah has been unveiled as 22Bet’s new Global Ambassador, joining a growing network of some of the continent’s most celebrated football figures.
The partnership brings one of Africa’s most respected former players into a programme centred on football engagement, responsible gambling awareness and community impact.
Appiah joins Togo icon Emmanuel Adebayor, former Kenya captain Victor Wanyama and Nigerian football great Daniel Amokachi as part of 22Bet’s African Football Network.
As Global Ambassador, the former Ghana captain will feature in football campaigns, exclusive content, supporter engagements and other major brand initiatives. He will also support programmes promoting responsible gambling and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives across communities.
Four African Football Icons, One Network
The four ambassadors represent different generations and regions of African football, but share careers that have made them recognisable figures across the continent and beyond.
Adebayor enjoyed an outstanding career in Europe, representing Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace in England, as well as Real Madrid and Monaco. The former Togo captain was named African Footballer of the Year in 2008 and remains one of his country’s greatest sporting figures.
Wanyama made history as the first Kenyan to play in the English Premier League. The powerful midfielder established himself at Southampton before earning a move to Tottenham Hotspur, becoming one of East Africa’s most prominent football exports.
Amokachi, meanwhile, was a key member of Nigeria’s celebrated generation that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994 and Olympic football gold at Atlanta 1996. The former forward enjoyed a distinguished club career with Everton, Club Brugge and Beşiktaş, winning the FA Cup with Everton in 1995.
Now, Appiah adds another major name to the network.
The Captain Who Made Ghana Believe
Nicknamed “Tornado,” Stephen Appiah occupies a special place in the history of Ghanaian football.
He captained the Black Stars to their first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance in 2006, ending decades of frustration for one of Africa’s most successful football nations.
Ghana made an immediate impression at the tournament in Germany, progressing from a difficult group featuring eventual champions Italy, the Czech Republic and the United States before reaching the Round of 16.
Four years later, Appiah was part of the Ghana squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, coming within a penalty kick of becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals.
His leadership, influence and deep connection with football supporters across Ghana and Africa will now form an important part of his new role with 22Bet.
“Football has given me an extraordinary connection with people in Ghana, across Africa and in many other parts of the world. I have always believed that the influence you gain through football should be used positively, and that is one of the reasons I am excited about this partnership with 22Bet,” Appiah said.
“Becoming a Global Ambassador is not only about representing a brand. It is also an opportunity to engage football fans, encourage responsible choices and work on projects that can make a real difference in our communities.”
From Accra to Europe’s Biggest Stages
Appiah’s remarkable international career was matched by an impressive journey through some of European football’s most competitive environments.
After emerging at Accra Hearts of Oak, he moved to Italy, where he represented Udinese, Parma, Brescia and Juventus during an era when Serie A attracted many of the world’s finest players.
He was part of Parma’s Coppa Italia-winning side in 2002 before joining Juventus, where he competed at the highest level domestically and in Europe.
Appiah later became a popular figure at Turkish giants Fenerbahçe, helping the club win the Süper Lig in the 2006/07 season and the Turkish Super Cup in 2007.
His career also included international success at youth level, including a FIFA U-17 World Cup triumph with Ghana, as well as appearances at the Olympic Games.
Football, Responsibility and Community Impact
While football will remain at the heart of Appiah’s ambassadorial role, 22Bet says the partnership is designed to extend beyond promotional campaigns.
Responsible gambling awareness will form a major part of the collaboration, with Appiah expected to participate in initiatives encouraging gambling to be approached strictly as entertainment for adults, while promoting informed decision-making, self-control and awareness of the risks involved.
The partnership will also focus on Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, using Appiah’s profile and influence to support communities and create opportunities, particularly for young people.
A 22Bet spokesperson said:
“Stephen Appiah represents many of the values we want this partnership to stand for — leadership, excellence, responsibility and a genuine connection with people. His influence goes far beyond football, particularly across Ghana and Africa.
“We are delighted to welcome him to the 22Bet family as our Global Ambassador. Together, we want to create memorable football experiences for supporters while also using this partnership as a platform to promote responsible gambling and support communities through meaningful CSR programmes.”
A Growing African Football Connection
The addition of Appiah further strengthens 22Bet’s African Football Network, bringing together four football personalities whose careers resonate across some of the continent’s biggest football markets.
Between them, Appiah, Adebayor, Wanyama and Amokachi have represented Ghana, Togo, Kenya and Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup, Africa Cup of Nations, Olympic Games and some of Europe’s biggest domestic competitions.
Their stories also connect different generations of African football supporters, from Amokachi’s achievements with Nigeria in the 1990s and Appiah’s leadership of Ghana’s breakthrough World Cup generation, to Adebayor’s Premier League prominence and Wanyama’s rise from Kenya to the English top flight.
For Appiah, the new role provides another opportunity to remain closely connected to the game while using the influence he built throughout his career to engage supporters across Africa and beyond.
For 22Bet, his appointment represents another important step in building an African football network around some of the continent’s most recognisable former players.
The partnership will seek to transform that collective football heritage into meaningful fan engagement, responsible gambling awareness and practical social initiatives, connecting four distinctive African football stories through one platform.
