For Sabalenka, though it was a tough loss to swallow, the Belarusian’s consolation is the fact that she will be the new world number one on Monday after a remarkably consistent year. During this period, she won the Australian Open and reached the semi-finals in Paris and at Wimbledon.
In her post-victory interview Gauff said, “It means so much to me, I feel like I’m a little bit in shock in this moment. That French Open loss was a heartbreak for me but I realised God puts you through tribulations and trials and this makes this moment even sweeter than I could imagine.”

“I’m so blessed in this life so I’m just thankful for this moment, I don’t have any words for it to be honest.”
Meanwhile, the men’s Final between Novak Djokovic and Danil Medvedev holds today by 9pm.
