FACT CHECK: Did Nike Unveil a new Super Eagles Jersey for AFCON?

Claim

Recently, many reports and news stories have been flying around the internet space and has been reported by blogs and even reputable news houses about Nike, producing a retro of the 1994 and 1996 jersey for the Super Eagles of Nigeria Africa Cup of Nations 2023 campaign, which begins on January 14, platinumnewsng.com facts check if the report is true.

Nothing as regards the launch or unveiling of a new jersey has been heard from the Nigeria Football Federation or the Super Eagles about the launch of a new or special jersey campaign. If there was any, it would have been expected this was revealed during the official launch of the Super Eagles AFCON 2023 campaign tagged ” Let’s do it Again” which was held in Lagos, few weeks ago.

Findings

From a further search on Nike’s official website, there is no single trace of the jersey. Neither, can any be found on Nike’s official handles across all social media platforms. Perplexed by the way this news was spread, an attempt was made to trace the root of the misinformation, it was discovered the design was done by an individual, not for Nike.

The individual went on to post the design on an Instagram page named Vickey Portfolio, which many has now taken the image and shared as the new official jersey of for the biennial competition.

The Nigerian Football Federation on Friday debunked rumours of a new official jersey release by Nike, platinumnewsng.com is reporting.

In a statement released via their official Twitter handle, the federation noted that “Rumours about a new jersey launch between NIKE and the senior Men’s National team circulating around social media has been brought to our notice. We want to inform the general public that this claim is not true. At the moment, we have no jersey being launched for the Super Eagles for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to be held in Côte d’Ivoire next month.”

Earlier, many individuals in social media, reports and news stories have been flying around about Nike producing a retro of the 1994 and 1996 jersey for the Super Eagles of Nigeria Africa Cup of Nations 2023 campaign, which begins on January 14.

Verdict – False

The images were not posted by Nike and do not have anything to do with the Nigeria Football Federation, but rather by another Instagram handle named Vicky Portfolio.
