NPFL24: Sporting Lagos drop valuable points in South West Derby

It was an end-to-encounter at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena as Sporting Lagos and Shooting Stars battled fiercely in a South West Derby, with the Noisy Lagosians hungry for a victory to alleviate their relegation concerns, platinumnewsng.com is reporting.

The home team, Sporting Lagos, started the game with intent but struggled to break through Shooting Stars’ resolute defence in the initial 23 minutes. The match maintained a tense atmosphere with better ball possession in favour of Sporting Lagos.

As the game progressed, Shooting Stars launched a purposeful attack in the 28th minute, but Sporting’s goalkeeper, Christian Nwoke, made a crucial save to deny the away team the lead. The pressure continued to mount on Sporting Lagos as Shooting Stars earned two quick corner kicks in the 32nd minute.

However, it was Sporting Lagos that broke the deadlock with a spectacular outside box rocket by Chinedu Ufere, putting them in the lead at 1-0 in the 41st minute. The celebration was short-lived as Sporting committed a blunder in the box, leading to a goal by Kareem Ademola for Shooting Stars, levelling the score at 1-1.

The drama continued with a penalty awarded to Sporting Lagos, adding to the chaos of the match. Sporting regained the lead in the 45+8th minute just before the first half

Five minutes into the second half, Shooting Stars responded with an equalizer by Adelowo Gbolagade, creating a breathtaking end-to-end affair.

The intensity persisted into the second half, with Shooting Stars dominating with incessant attacks, while Sporting Lagos faced immense pressure to secure a win.

Despite a penalty appeal by Sporting Lagos being turned down, both teams displayed skill throughout the match seeking a winner which never came through. Captain Vincent Akpikpi was shown a straight red for a rash challenge on Ayodeji Bamidele.

Placed 16th on the log, the last time Sporting Lagos won a game was 43 days ago in a 1-0 victory over Katsina United.
