The National Sports Commission (NSC) has reaffirmed its dedication to the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) vision of advancing women’s participation in sports governance.
As part of this commitment, the Commission has officially recognized the Association of Former Female Athletes of Nigeria (AFFAN) as a stakeholder within the governance framework of National Sports Federations (NSF).
This landmark decision underscores Nigeria’s determination to meet international standards while deepening gender inclusiveness in sports administration. NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, have been vocal advocates for diversity, with women already leading three of the Commission’s core departments — Mrs. Mbora (Federations & Elite Athletes), Mrs. Amaka Ashiofu (Grassroots), and Mrs. Thecla Opara (Festivals & Para Sports).
By endorsing AFFAN’s participation on NSF boards, the NSC is not only expanding leadership opportunities for women but also drawing from the rich experiences of former female athletes who once carried Nigeria’s flag on global stages. Their expertise, discipline, and passion will now be harnessed in shaping policies, mentoring future stars, and sustaining a legacy of excellence in Nigerian sports.
The Commission emphasizes that AFFAN’s inclusion is more than a structural adjustment; it is a recognition that those who once won medals for Nigeria deserve a voice in building the future of the nation’s sporting success. Accordingly, AFFAN representatives will take part in the forthcoming NSF board elections.
Through this strategic move, the NSC reinforces its commitment to fairness, inclusivity, and sustainable growth across Nigerian sports.
