Bayelsa Queens of Yenagoa Wednesday continue their fine run to winning the Nigeria Women Football League Premiership with a comfortable 2-0 win over Confluence Queens.

The Restoration Girls settled into the game early and easily as they moved the ball around the pitch with brewing confidence. But it took them 23 minutes to record their first goal of the game.

Zainab Olopade’s 23rd-minute well-taken free kick left goalkeeper Echefu Sylvia motionless but threw the Yenagoa fans into wild jubilation.

A few minutes later, Mercy Omokwo breezed past her marker and beat the goalkeeper but no thanks to the crossbar that denied her from getting what could have been her first and a beautiful goal recorded in her name.

The first half ended with the away team taking a slim lead, but the scoreline didn’t reflect the true complexion of the game. Bayelsa Queens could have been at least three goals up against the harmless Confluence Queens.

Coach Sabo Okala made some tactical changes to his team, but Bayelsa Queens held up their lines and kept the pressure on their host.

As it was in their last game, Bayelsa Queens got another late-minute goal to kill off the game. This time, it was Chinyere Igboamalu who got the second goal for her team – her 7th for the season — the forward picked up a pass inside the box, dressed her ball well, and found the corner of the goal — a classic goal that was.

Bayelsa Queens sits top of the competition table with 7 points from 3 games. They will next face Heartland Queens in the early kick off of match day 4. The match will take place at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa.
