The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) football team, led by their captain, Prof. Darlington Obaseki, delivered a decisive 3-0 victory over the University of Benin (UNIBEN) on Wednesday, November 19.
The match, held at the home ground of the UNIBEN Staff team, the UNIBEN Sports Complex, marked a football farewell event for the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of UNIBEN, Prof. Lilian Imuetinyan, as that will be the last time both sides meet whilst she remains VC.
UBTH dominated the game, expressing their prowess with three second-half goals. Reuben Mker opened the scoring from the penalty spot (37’), followed by a close-range finish from Aigbe Etinosa (42’). The highlight of the match came from Michael Ediale, nicknamed “Drogba,” who sealed the victory with a stunning Puskás-worthy strike (54’).
The match played in two halves of 30 minutes each, saw Prof. Darlington Obaseki temporarily come out of retirement to captain the UBTH Staff team. Despite a goalless first half, UBTH controlled the game with relentless attacks and numerous missed opportunities that kept the spectators on the edge of their seats.
This symbolic friendly match was organized to foster camaraderie between the two institutions, making it a fitting final encounter under Prof. Lilian’s leadership as Vice-Chancellor. Present at the event was also Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Buniyamin Ayinde. Also, the University of Benin Dean of Students, Professor Clement Ighodaro.
