TRANSFERS: NIGERIAN PLAYERS TO WATCH IN THE 2022/23 SEASON

With the 2022/23 season set to Get underway and already started in some leagues, a lot of teams in Europe’s top 5 leagues have scouted through the transfer market and have signed and are on the verge of signing new players to reinforce the squad.

Having Nigerian playing in such leagues has seen a number of them change clubs. Here are some of the Nigerian Players that were involved in the transfer window ahead of the build-up to the new season.

Taiwo Awoniyi is one of the big Nigerian names during the transfer window. The 24 years old who netted 20 times and created 5 assists in 43 appearances for German side FC Union Berlin in all competitions made his move to Nottingham Forest with a fee of €20.00 million on July 1st, 2022 and signed a contract until 2027 with the English side. He however played a total of 27 minutes as his side suffered a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle in their first match of the season.

Ademola Lookman who was on loan to Leicester city returned to his club RB Leipzig in Germany but was then sold to Italian side Atlanta. In his spell in England, the 24-year-old made 42 appearances in all competitions netting eight goals and providing 5 assists.

26-year-old Joe Aribo has found his way into the starting lineup of Southampton following a move from Rangers FC in Scotland. Having a total of 57 appearances in all competitionsq for the Scottish side, he made 19 goal contributions netting nine times and providing 10 assists.

Tyronne Ebuehi who saw his loan spell at Venezia secured a move to Empoli on a free transfer from the Portuguese side Benfica B. While on loan, the 26-year-old right-back made a total of 20 appearances in all competitions receiving one yellow card and a red card.

Chidera Ejuke made a loan move from CSKA Moscow to the Bundesliga side, Hertha BSC for a €7.50 million fee. While in Russia, the left-winger made 32 appearances in all competitions finding the back of the net five times and creating five assists.

After a free transfer to Salernitana, Joel Obi joins Italian side Reggina on another free transfer. The 31-year-old midfielder made 23 appearances for The Garnets in all competitions while providing one assist.

24 years old David Okereke made his move from Belgian side Club Brugge to Italian side Cremonese for an undisclosed fee after seeing off his loan spell at Venezia FC. The centre forward however made 33 appearances in his spell in Italy, Scoring 7 goals with one assist.

After a loan spell at Valerenga, Taofeek Ismaheel joined up with his club FC Lorient in France on June 30th, 2022. While in Norway, the winger made 14 appearances in all competitions having a goal and assist to his name.

This season promises to be exciting as a whole lot of sporting events are set to go down in the world of football and also in Europe’s top five leagues.
