Unuanel confident in Peseiro’s wherewithal to equal Westerhof, Keshi AFCON feats in Ivory Coast

Former Kwara United coach, Samson Unuanel believes that the Super Eagles gaffer Jose Peseiro can clinch the 2023 African Cup of Nations, just as Clemens Westerhof and Stephen Keshi if he can form an aura of better understanding around the players.

Recall that Westerhof won Nigeria’s second AFCON championship in Tunisia in 1994 while Keshi replicated the same achievement in 2013 to win the third title in South Africa.

It was notably seen in the final lap of the qualifying series for the main tournament, that Nigeria finished top of the summit of Group A in grand style, with a laudable 6-0 victory over Sao Tome and Principe on Sunday in Uyo.

Just as the man-on-fire Victor Osimhen pulled up a star performance to score his second hat-trick in the 2023 AFCON qualification rounds, with further goals from Ademola Lookman, Taiwo Awoniyi and Samuel Chukwueze to complete the annihilation in a one-sided game the Super Eagles dominated from start to finish.

Also, Nigeria ended as group leaders with 15 points from six matches ahead of Guinea Bissau, who had 13 points.

The Edo born in an interview with Completesports.com, stated that Peseiro can follow the footprints of Westerhof and Keshi if the players can understand themselves better.

“This team is looking really good. The coach is gradually moulding a team capable of winning the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

“Yes, he can emulate the achievement of Westerhof and Keshi considering the array of players at his disposal. All that I think the team needs right now is for the players to understand themselves better.

“We have a very strong team and I have no doubt that can make Nigerians proud in AFCON 2023,” Unuanel said.
