Six goals were recorded in three matches as the maiden Oredo 5-Aside School Football Championship kicked off today across centers in Oredo local government area in the ancient city of Benin, Edo State, platinumnewsng.com is reporting.
The tournament opened with the keenly contested opening match between Ogboe and Ohuoba primary schools at the Uwa Primary School field. The away team after so much effort got the better of their Ogboe counterparts 1-0 courtesy of Dennis Ijesurobo, to go top of group A.
In the girl’s category, Ogbe College girls sent a warning signal to other competitors with a well-won game over New Era school, 3-0 on penalties after a barren 0-0 at full time, against their pitiful opponents.
The third game of the day saw Ogbe School recorded a slim victory over Ohuoba in a match that saw many beautiful chances wasted. Ogbe after many wasted efforts got a goal to their names and held up to that till the end of the game to the disappointment of Ohuoba School.
Chairman, Oredo Local Government Area, Dr. Tom Obaseki expressed his satisfaction with the participating schools’ performance, emphasizing the importance of sports in child development and the Council’s commitment to harnessing raw talents.
He encouraged support for the tournament, which aims to unite school children and discover hidden talents.
Hostilities continue tomorrow with so much expected in the matches lined up for tomorrow, to make the teeming crowd enjoy the best of football at the basic grassroots level.
New Era College, Uwa Primary School, Anglican Girls Grammar School, and Owegie Primary School will be hosting games in what will see the revelation of emerging talents.
Present at the Uwa Primary School packed field to cheer the children include the Vice Chairman of the Council, Hon. Oghogho Abimbo, HOLGA, Dr. Osaini Igbinigie, HODs, Supervisory Councillors, PDP leaders in the government area, and a host of others attended the football tournament
