BOWFT ’22: Anderline’s heroic saves earn Delta Queens third place finish.

Delta Queens Football Club of Delta beat Nasarawa Amazons 4-2 on penalties at the Western Boys High School football pitch to win the third place prize of the second Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament.

The match started with pride in place for the two teams and they both gave good accounts of themselves in the first half.

The only meaningful chance of the first half fell into Chinansa Agoh who had an opportunity in the 22nd minute of the game after Peace Abbey put her through, but her shot was too weak to pull anything against Nasarawa Amazons’ goalkeeper, Uchenna Chukwu.

The second half began with expectations that a goal at least would separate both sides as the two Coaches made some changes to boost their team’s attacks.

Nasarawa Amazons had a chance to hit Delta, but a great save from Delta Queens Goalkeeper Anderline Mgbachi denied Nasarawa Amazons from taking the lead through a dangerous freekick by Chinyere Kalu.

Though the coaches made other changes, none could outsmart the other as the game ended in a barren draw.

In the shootouts, Anderline Mbgachi guessed right to deny Isah Sikiratu and Adebisi Saheed who missed doe Nasarawa Amazons as Delta Queens (Arit Itu, Vera Samuel, Fehintola Mabakonje and Chinansa Agoh) scored four to earn the bragging rights of the fourth-placed team.

Speaking after the game, Nasarawa Amazons’ captain, Joy Duru said their efforts weren’t just enough to help them go home with the third place prize. “we prepared very well for the game, but unfortunately we couldn’t just get it right”

Coach Blankson Tosan registered his delight that his team could come atop at the end of the game crediting their win to God.

Delta Queens will go home with 2 million naira for placing third and will be presented with their dummy cheque and medals at the closing ceremony later in the day.
