BOWFT23: Super Sub Eunice Godwin strike sends Edo Queens to the Semis

The Benin-based team coached by Moses Adukwu claimed a 2-1 victory in a match that saw super-sub, Eunice Godwin finding the back of the net.

The first half of the game was fiercely contested with both Edo Queens and Heartland displaying impressive skills. The numbers at the Stadia was treated to a moment of brilliance in the 38th minute when Abdul Rasheed capitalized on a loose ball from a free kick to give Edo Queens a 1-0 lead.

As the second half commenced, Edo Queens continued to pile on the pressure, launching wave after wave of attacks. However, in the 63rd minute, it was Heartland’s turn to shine as Ekezie Okachi headed in from a corner, leveling the score at 1-1.

With the game hanging in the balance, Heartland’s Coach Adanna Nnah resorted to time-wasting tactics, hoping to push the match into a penalty shootout after 90 minutes of regulation time. 

But then came the moment that would define this match and send Edo Queens into jubilation. Super-Sub Eunice Godwin and Joy Jerry combined brilliantly on the left wing. Eunice Godwin showcased her skills, latching onto a precise pass from Joy Jerry, and found the back of the net in the 90+1st minute. It was a goal that brought joy to the faces of Edo Queens’ supporters and sealed their ticket to the semi-finals.

Speaking after the intense match, Eunice Godwin expressed her elation, saying, “I am very happy and I really thank God for not failing me. We are confident of going ahead to win the trophy, and we will do it.”

Coach Moses of Edo Queens acknowledged the challenges faced during the game, stating, “The game was out of our hands. When you underestimate a team, you will find yourself in a mess. We’ve made it to the semi-finals, but we have a lot of work to do. Technically, I know Eunice as a goalscorer, but she has not found her scoring boots. When I saw Goodness was not doing well, I had to introduce Eunice.”

This victory means Edo Queens are now through to the semi-finals, where they will face the winner between FC Robo and Remo Stars Ladies at the Western Boys Mini Stadia on Monday by 4pm.
