Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu Vows to Elevate Edo’s Sporting Legacy in Governorship Bid

Promises Expansion Beyond Bendel Insurance, Pledges Support for Diverse Sports Development

On Monday morning, a fervent declaration aimed at propelling Edo State into a new era of sporting excellence was made by Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon Philip Shaibu, aspiring for the gubernatorial position of the state.

Shaibu spotlighted his ambitious plans to rejuvenate the state’s sports sector whilst boasting of the successful resurgence of Bendel Insurance under his stewardship, Shaibu expressed his commitment to ensuring broader sporting growth across various disciplines within Edo.

“At some time during this administration, Bendel Insurance became my responsibility. Through strategic management, we have returned Bendel Insurance to the heights of glory it belongs,” remarked Shaibu.

Bendel Insurance were languishing in the second tier of Nigeria football, the Nigeria National League but with Shaibu on board he always stated that his target was to return Insurance back to the Nigeria Premier Football League and ensure qualification to the continent. This was achieved by the Benin Arsenal when they finished top of Group B1 of the NNL.

The team went on an invincible run in the regular season to top Group A of the NPFL, qualifying for the Super Six where they finished fourth, missing out on Continental qualification. The team eventually ensured continental qualification was sealed with a victory over Enugu Rangers, in the Federation Cup.

Shaibu emphasized that beyond the restoration of Bendel Insurance, his gubernatorial aspirations are firmly rooted in amplifying support for diverse sporting activities in Edo.

“We will ensure that the sports sector grows, just like Bendel Insurance, we will ensure other sports are given priority so our teeming sports people will be able to showcase their potential and make a living through sport,” he affirmed passionately.
