By Osaro Matthew

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations currently taking place in Ivory Coast has seen the host nation qualify for the finals of the tournament where they will face Nigeria and they will be hoping to join the list of host and win nations. Osaro Matthew on platinumnewsng.com examines their chances.

Nigeria who hosted the prestigious competition twice, won it as a host in 1980. The Super Eagles will be hoping to be party spoilers on Sunday by defeating the host to win their 4th AFCON title.

This is the second time AFCON is being hosted in Ivory Coast after hosting it in 1984 and they will be hoping to make it their third title after winning it in 1992 and 2015.

The Elephants will be looking forward to being the ninth nation to host and win the AFCON tournament on Sunday, February 11 2024.

Egypt are the most decorated team in AFCON with 7 trophies to their name. They also sit on top of the host and win list, winning the trophy 3 times as host.

Four times AFCON champions, Ghana have hosted the tournament 4 times and won it in 1963. Sudan has also hosted the tournament 2 times and won it in 1970 as host.

Tunisia has hosted AFCON 3 times but won it in front of their home fans in 2004 while their North African neighbours, Algeria hosted the tournament once in 1990 and went on to win it.

South Africa and Ethiopia have hosted the AFCON competition 3 times each and won it as hosts in 1996 and 1962 respectively.

Will Ivory Coast be able to equal their opponent Nigeria’s feat on Sunday, by making it a win as a host after hosting the tournament twice and also making it their third trophy in the prestigious competition, equalling Nigeria’s AFCON title?
