Pre-WAFCON Friendly: Okoronkwo Fires Falcons Past Tanzania

Esther Okoronkwo’s 89th-minute strike earned Super Falcons of Nigeria a 2-1 victory over Tanzania’s Twiga Stars as they wrapped their PRE-WAFCON 2026 camping in Casablanca, Morocco.

Rasheedat Ajibade opened the scoring for the nine-time African champions, converting from an assist by Rinsola Babajide, twelve minutes into the game.

Coach Justine Madugu made his first substitution of the game a few minutes later, removing Rofiat Imuran for returning Glory Ogbonna. The Super Falcons held on to the lead till the end of the first half.

The Super resumed the second half picking it from where they left it, but the Tanzanians were resolute at the backline.

56 minutes into the game, the coach made more changes, sending in Folashade Ijamilusi, Uchenna Kanu, Michelle Alozie and Joy Omewa in place of Glory Ogbonna, Toni Payne, Rinsola Babajide and Asisat Oshoala

Madugu made another substitution in the 78th minute, with Esther Okoronkwo, Osinachi Ohale and Halimatu Ayinde taking the place of Christy Ucheibe, Sikiratu Isah and Joy Omewa.

A minute after that, Tanzania levelled proceedings.

Nigeria pushed further and one minute before the end of regulation time, restored their lead through substitute Esther Okoronkwo, who struck in the 89th minute to seal the win.

The result gives the Super Falcons the needed momentum as they prepare to open their WAFCON campaign against Malawi in Group B on July 28, aiming to defend the continental honour in Morocco.
